About Us
Maple Creek Ranch

The Maple Creek Ranch has a long history of tree farming with the goal of sustaining the forest through selective logging. Donald Sorenson started this work and handed it off to his daughter Donna and her husband Brian 27 years ago. Donna is passionate about preserving the forest and keeping the property intact.

Six years ago we shifted from a focus on tree farming to inviting guests to experience the magic of our land. Our key focus is to provide a wonderful guest experience and exceed our guests expectations. During this time we have received hundreds of five star reviews from our guests. Many guests have mentioned that we have the perfect location for the perfect wedding.

History
Our family came to Cohasset in 1905. Sam and Lillie Sorenson ran the local Cohasset store and post office. They purchased the first parts of the land that was later to become the Maple Creek Ranch. Sam managed the store while Lillie taught school in a one-bedroom schoolhouse for 30 years. Their son Donald grew up in the area and started buying additional acreage in 1934 until it eventually reached 534 acres in size.

Donald selectively logged the property and managed the property carefully. One of his stated goals was to, “Create an improved wildlife habitat designed to encourage a diversity of wildlife species”. His wife, Audrey, was also heavily involved in the Maple Creek Ranch and in 1953 their property was certified as a Tree Farm.

Maple Creek & Eastern
Donald loved everything about trains. In the early 1960s, he and some friends built a steam engine railroad called the Maple Creek & Eastern that runs on a one-mile track on the property. Maple Creek & Eastern got its name because Maple Creek originates on the property and the first part of the track ran east from the pond area.
Donald and his wife traveled by train throughout the world by train. He grew up in an era where one could easily catch a train to the bay area using the Sacramento Northern Railway. Unfortunately, many train tracks were replaced by the freeways we have today.
The train had been maintained and upgraded the past 30 years by Donald’s great-nephew, Jon Coffman. Jon is a vital member of the Maple Creek Ranch team.
